pre·cious (preSHəs) adjective
(of an object, substance, or resource) of great value; not to be wasted or treated
carelessly. “precious works of art.” -Merriam-Webster
Recently, I described a friend as precious. They heard it and mentioned to me they
didn’t exactly appreciate it. It got me thinking… Now I can understand on the one hand,
as many times as the word is used to describe children, and can seem condescending if
applied to any adult. However, as Merriam-Webster writes, precious is an awesome
The definition offered is exactly as I use it… as humans, we give value to everything.
Gold is only a precious metal because we say it is. A diamond is made by applying
tremendous force and heat on minerals and rock to create what we deem the most
precious stone. In essence, one goes through the fire and comes out the other side
transformed into brilliance! So indeed, I see it as a huge compliment!
Each of us gets to decide for ourselves what definition we give to a word. So if someone
calls me something, it’s up to me to decide how I take that on. Only I have power over
myself and my beliefs. I know I am precious!!
Affirmation: I define my world!
